In 2018, Jacob worked with W.W. Norton & Company’s Liveright imprint and designer Steve Attardo to photograph Mayor Pete Buttigieg for his first and forthcoming book, Shortest Way Home.
Jacob scouted locations around his hometown of South Bend that portrayed the book’s theme of a Midwest city becoming a blueprint for the future of American renewal.
The resulting cover photograph shows Pete across the street from Chico’s, a restaurant founded by Federico Rodriguez Jr., a latino businessman and volunteer firefighter. Chico’s is located near the corner of Western Avenue and Olive Street along a corridor that has become emblematic of South Bend’s resurgence due to steady new business creation and City infrastructure investment in storefront facades, sidewalks, streets, and streetlights.
